I’m Struggling To Come Up With An Appropriate Analogy For The U.S.

Tommy Robinson, the former leader of the English Defense League has quit the racist organization and apologized to Muslims.

Now, my understanding of the EDL and its workings isn’t especially deep, but they strike me as falling somewhere between the Tea Party and the KKK in terms of xenophobia, but more violent than either of the American groups. So, as near as I can tell, this is a Pretty Big Deal. Aside from the symbolic stuff like the apologies and admissions of wrongdoing, he’s suggested that he’ll work with the police.

There’s a lot going on behind the scenes here that I’m not up on. I wouldn’t be surprised if his change of heart was influenced by a police investigation that was closing in on him. Regardless of whether or not Robinson’s motivations were entirely pure, I can’t see any scenario in which this isn’t a major blow to the EDL. Anything that is a major blow tot the EDL is something that I’m on board with.

I don’t know what would be the equivalent of this in the U.S. Gun rights groups supporting gun control legislation and apologizing to the families of kids killed in the Sandy Hook massacre? Don’t hold your breath.
